What Direction Should Your Casement Windows Open?

If you are looking to install casement windows in your home, one thing you need to consider is the direction they will open. Of course, they should open outward rather than inward, but determining where the hinges are located is entirely up to your preference. Local window and door replacement contractor Renewal by Andersen® of Memphis shares this guide to help you make an informed choice.

About Casement Window Handing

Handing is a term used to describe the direction a window or door opens. In determining this, you need to look at your window from the outside of your home. For casement windows, the handing can be either one of the two:

  • Left-handed window, with the hinges on the left and the locking mechanism on the right

  • Right-handed window, with the hinges on the right and the locking mechanism on the left

Choosing Which Direction to Open Your Casement Windows

While there are no set rules in determining which side of your casement replacement windows should be hinged, it helps to keep these important considerations in mind to get the most out of your investment:

  • Hinges on Either Side of a Casement Window Pair – If you are looking to install two casement windows side-by-side, be sure the left side is the left-handed window and the right side is the right-handed one. This allows you to open your windows like double doors. This also applies to casement windows installed in a larger bay window.

  • Aesthetics – To ensure the best appearance, consider installing a casement window with its hinges located to the closest corner of the room. This way, all of the windows will open toward the center of the living space.

  • Ventilation – Consider installing left-handed and right-handed casement windows on opposite sides of the house to take advantage of cross-ventilation.

"The men who came out were able to work with each other good and professional showing us how the job would start and how long it would take. While they were doing their job they saw that the windows sills were off balance and very diligent and made it repairable to place the new windows in they cleaned up the area where they were working and made it look like no one had been there. They were very polite."
