Why Old Windows Rattle

A rattling sound in the home is usually a cause for concern, especially in old windows with wooden frames. It is often an indication that a component of your window is damaged or broken and that a replacement could potentially be in order. In this post, Renewal by Andersen of Memphis — a trusted provider of energy-efficient windows — lists some of the parts that you should check if you hear your window rattling.

Why Old Windows Rattle

Sash

The sash typically gets damaged due to harsh weather conditions or normal wear and tear. When this happens, it’s common to find the sash no longer fits in the track, which then creates a rattling sound. In some cases, the sash can still be repaired. However, it would still be best to have a professional check the current state of your window. Depending on its condition, a window replacement may be a better solution than a window sash repair.

Glass

The rattling sound coming from your window may also be caused by loose glass. Much like sash problems, loose glass can still be fixed by applying caulk on all the cracks and edges of the window. Window installation companies often suggest this remedy in order to close any gaps in a window and ensure that it is airtight.

Mortise-Plate

A mortise-plate functions to keep your window closed. When this becomes loose or damaged, your window won’t be able to close properly. This then results in a rattling sound. To fix this issue, you can remove and then refit the plate so as to ensure that it is properly installed. However, as with other types of window damage, it is best to assess the overall condition of the window before disregarding the need for window replacement. Sometimes replacing your window completely is the more practical and long-term solution.

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
