What to Look For in a Replacement Window Warranty

The warranty is the amount of time a window company or manufacturer will service a product for factory defects. It doesn’t include damage due to neglect, abuse and natural elements.

Look for these items in a replacement window warranty.

Product Warranty

The product warranty accounts for replacement parts due to manufacturer’s defects. It usually includes failed glass seals in an insulated glass unit, defective hardware and warpage. Some manufacturers offer accidental glass breakage. Product warranties don’t typically cover the labor required for replacing parts. Your house window replacement company should handle the installation if they offer the service.

Consider if the product warranty is transferrable if you’re thinking of selling your home in the future. It will allow you to transfer the warranty to future property owners. Prorated means the coverage of the warranty goes down over time. You’d want a warranty that is transferrable and non-prorated.

Labor Warranty

Installation-related problems usually manifest themselves within the first year after the project. A warranty that lasts at least 10 years are ideal. Look for any service call or diagnosis charges, and coverage to install parts provided in the manufacturer’s warranty. Take note of the length of the warranty as well as its inclusions and exclusions.

Labor warranties are made to cover faulty or defective installation methods. Meaning, it doesn’t include maintenance items, such as caulking, track cleaning or anything that affects window operation.

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
