Mistakes To Avoid When Replacing Exterior Doors

The front door is the first thing guests see when they visit your home. As such, it’s important to choose a window and door replacement that complements the rest of your exterior.

In addition to doing your research on different door styles and designs, it would be a good idea to learn more about the mistakes to avoid when replacing exterior doors. Common mistakes you should avoid include:

Replacing Exterior Doors

Choosing the Wrong Color

While choosing colors for your front door is mostly a matter of design preference, it’d be helpful to keep in mind a few rules while choosing colors for your new exterior door. The first one would be to avoid trendy as much as possible. There’s nothing wrong with trying to keep up with the latest design trends. The problem is trends tend to go out of style as fast as they came into prominence. When in doubt, it’s best to stick to neutral colors, which complement a wide variety of colors and never go out of style.

Not Matching Your Architectural Style

Remember: when it comes to exterior design, consistency is key. There’s a reason why certain replacement windows and doors have been traditionally used in certain architectural styles. If you want to add a personal touch to your exterior, there’s nothing wrong with making a few changes. However, you need to make sure they won’t clash with the wider design.

Choosing a Material Not Suited to Your Area’s Climate

Prolonged exposure to the elements can take its toll on your exterior, especially your exterior doors. That’s why your door replacement needs to be durable enough to withstand your area’s climate.

Here’s a tip: consult a local door replacement contractor about the window and door materials suited to your area’s climate. Since they’re familiar with the local climate and building codes, they can make better recommendations.

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
