An Easy Guide to Hiring a Window Contractor

Finding a reliable window contractor in the area can be difficult if you don’t know the qualities to look for. In this blog, window and door replacement contractor Renewal by Andersen® of Memphis shares an easy guide to how to find a window contractor in your area.

An Easy Guide to Hiring a Window Contractor

Search for Candidates

Run a quick online search and you’ll probably come up with a few dozen contractors in the area. You can pare down this list by first asking friends, family and neighbors for recommendations. Check their Better Business Bureau (BBB) profile, including their star ratings. Customer reviews can be particularly helpful, especially if the platform, like that of BBB, allows the contractor to respond to customer issues.

Call the Potential Contractors

Once you have a shortlist of window contractors in the area, it’s time to make some calls. But before you do, prepare a list of questions. Here are some frequently asked questions to get you started.

  • What Products Do You Offer? — You should consider options other than vinyl replacement windows. Composite frames like our own Fibrex® material have proven long-term performance and are more durable than wood or vinyl frames. If you have specific window styles or designs in mind, ask if the window contractor offers custom window shapes and sizes.

  • How Long Have You Been In the Business? — The longer they are in the business, the more experience they probably have with replacement windows.

  • Will This Project Require Permits? — Permits may be required depending on the extent of the project. It is the contractor’s responsibility to secure all permits, but you still need to make sure they’re secured before installation begins.

  • What Is Your Typical Payment Plan? — Avoid contractors who ask for 100% of the project cost upfront. Typically, legitimate contractors ask for a downpayment, an installment after the materials are delivered, then one or two more payments culminating in a final payment upon completion.

Schedule Appointments

At this point, you should have a much shorter list, which means it’s time to schedule appointments. A typical appointment will have the contractor inspect your existing windows and assess the condition of the existing frames and opening. If there are structural issues, they will need to be repaired and will factor into the estimated cost. You will also discuss options, including styles and colors. Legitimate contractors will give you ample time to review your written estimate. If you feel like you’re being pressured into signing it, take that contractor off your shortlist.

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
