Why Replace Drafty Windows

Don’t underestimate how much heat or cool air is lost because of drafty windows. According to the Department of Energy, heat gain and loss through windows account for 25% to 30% of residential heating and cooling costs. To reduce your heating and cooling costs, window leaks should be addressed as soon as possible.

How can you tell if you have a drafty window? By keeping an eye and ear out for warning signs.

Why Replace Drafty Windows

Signs You Have Drafty Windows

Common warning signs are:

  • Rattling noises – Glazing putty is responsible for keeping your window’s glass panes in place. If it becomes brittle over time, your windows might produce rattling sounds whenever they’re hit by strong winds.
  • Gaps between the wall and the window frame – These gaps are usually caused by installation errors. However, gaps can also form if your window isn’t suited to your area’s climate. For instance, wooden window frames expand and contract as temperature rise and fall, potentially shifting window panes and forming gaps between the wall and window frame. That’s why it’s best to consult a professional contractor before choosing a window and door replacement.
  • Foggy window glass – Foggy windows are usually a sign there’s too much humidity inside your home. However, if the glass sealing around your window’s insulated glass unit is damaged, moisture can infiltrate the space between the two window panes, fogging up the insides of the glass panes.

Should You Repair or Replace Drafty Windows?

Most contractors would recommend installing new insulated replacement windows. Manufacturers fill insulated windows with argon or krypton, nontoxic gases that can prevent heat transfer. Window repairs can prevent these gases from leaking out but can’t restore a window’s overall energy efficiency.
