Repairing Window Rot Caused by Condensation

Repairing rot is not a quick and easy process. However, it can still be done if you have the right tools and observe the correct procedure. Of course, if you think this task is beyond your abilities, hand it over to a professional. Also, the paint on old wooden windows typically contain lead. So to avoid compromising your health and safety, it’s best to call an expert.

In this article, trusted window company Renewal by Andersen® of Memphis shares some tips on how you can repair rotten wood on your old window.

Scrape and Fill With Epoxy

You can scrape out the rotten wood by using a chisel. Then, with a 1/4-inch bit fitted onto a drill, create a series of holes throughout the affected area. Make sure the holes are one inch apart and angled slightly downward. Check if the wood is damp and ensure it’s completely dry before filling the holes with epoxy.

You’ll have to fill the holes repeatedly until the wood is saturated and the holes can no longer be filled any further. Allow one week for the epoxy to cure. Then, put epoxy wood filler into the holes. Make sure the holes are full before covering the rest of the rotten wood with epoxy.

Get a New Window

For windows with rotted sills or trim, experts usually recommend replacing them instead. The windows offered by Renewal by Andersen of Memphis have frames and sashes made of Fibrex®, which is a composite material that uses real wood fiber. These windows are tested and proven to perform better and last longer, and they offer superior energy efficiency resulting in energy savings. You really get value for your money with these windows. And on top of that, you are guaranteed to receive an exceptional window replacement service.

Other Tips to Keep in Mind

Don’t forget to wear chemical-resistant gloves when working with epoxy. And when possible, time your repairs during a two-week period with dry weather forecast. The epoxy will need time to cure. And if you’re repainting your window too, you need to allot enough time for the paint to dry.
