Why Vinyl Windows Warp

Choosing ENERGY STAR® windows is the best way to maximize the benefits of your window replacement project. Aside from this, frame material also plays an important role in determining the performance of your windows. This is where vinyl greatly outshines its wooden predecessors. Vinyl windows come with a lot of advantages and none of the drawbacks that wooden and aluminum windows have.

Vinyl Windows Warp

Unfortunately, vinyl is not without its disadvantages. There is one problem, in particular, that’s unique to vinyl windows and can affect the way it looks as well as the way it performs: warping. Here is a primer from our experts at Renewal by Andersen® of Memphis on warping vinyl windows and what you can do to avoid this happening.

Why Vinyl Warps

Vinyl is a highly durable plastic material used to frame highly energy-efficient windows. Its chemical composition is similar to regular plastic with key differences that mainly add to its strength and heat resistance. However, age and exposure slowly degrades this durability, causing the windows to warp under direct sunlight.

Why Warping Is a Problem

When a vinyl replacement window warps, the size and shape of the frames, sashes and jambs can change. This poses problems on how the window operates. In a sliding window, the frame itself can cause the tracks to be off-kilter, causing issues with the sliding mechanism. Casement and double-hung windows also face the same problems with warping.

What Can You Do About Warping

Many window installation companies and manufacturers have tried to solve the warping problem of vinyl but Renewal by Andersen offers the best alternative in Fibrex®. Fibrex is an exclusive material made with a high-quality thermoplastic polymer and reclaimed wood chips to combat warping. As a frame material, it offers all the aesthetic value of traditional wooden windows and the enhanced warp-resistant strength of vinyl.

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
