Single Vs. Double-Hung Windows: What Are the Differences?

Single and double-hung windows are traditional window styles that are still offered to today’s homeowners. While they look the same, there are certain differences that makes one worth considering over the other. Replacement windows installer Renewal by Andersen® of Memphis discusses these differences.

Single-Hung Vs. Double-Hung Windows

The main difference between single and double-hung windows is in their upper halves. Single-hung windows feature a fixed upper half, while double-hung windows have a second sash that can be opened and closed as needed. As the older style of the two, you’re bound to find single-hung windows in historic homes. The fixed upper half is typically built with Colonial-style grilles, which, on old windows, are usually set with small, single-pane glass. Many homeowners prefer single-hung windows because of their simplicity.

Double-hung windows, on the other hand, are a relatively recent design derived from single-hung windows. The two-sash design extends its functionality in terms of ventilation. In fact, it is the best replacement windows for bedrooms that can only fit one window. Double-hung windows can be opened in such a way that you’ll have two openings: one vents stale air while the other pulls fresh air in.

Cleaning and Maintenance

In addition to efficient ventilation, double-hung windows are easy to clean and maintain. One of the risks of having single-hung windows is when you have to clean the exterior side of the upper half, as it is difficult to reach it from the inside. While it is possible to clean single-hung windows from the outside, it can be risky when you’re cleaning upper-story windows.

Double-hung windows do not have this problem, thanks to sashes that can be tilted inwards for easy cleaning. Thanks to our High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass packages and Fibrex® material frames, you don’t have to use special cleaning products to keep it clean.

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
