Metrics to Consider When Assessing Window Performance

Upgrading your windows is one of the best ways to improve your home’s energy efficiency. To get the most out of your investment, however, you first have to assess their performance. For this, you need to learn about certain metrics that are in place to help you compare products and make informed purchases. Renewal by Andersen® of Memphis, one of the top local window installation companies, discusses four energy performance ratings to consider.

 Assessing Window Performance

U-Factor

The U-factor measures the amount of heat inside your home that can escape through a window. The lower its value, the more the window is capable of resisting heat flow and providing greater insulation for your home. It shouldn’t be confused with the R-value, which measures the effectiveness of insulation in your home’s energy envelope, including the walls, flooring and anything that acts as a barrier separating the indoors and outdoors.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient

The SHGC is a rating that measures the amount of solar radiation admitted through a window—either transmitted directly or absorbed and subsequently released as heat indoors. Energy-efficient windows with low SHGC ratings work better in homes situated in hot climates because of how they prevent rooms from overheating, especially in the afternoon.

Air Leakage

This rating measures the volume of air that can penetrate a home through a window. It might be an optional rating unlike the U-factor and SHGC, but it is nonetheless an important metric because it indicates how airtight a window is.

Visible Transmittance

This rating measures the ability of the window glazing to transmit sunlight into a home. Windows with a high VT rating may reduce your dependence on artificial lighting. Reflective coatings are also applied on the glass surfaces to keep out unwanted heat while still allowing natural light to enter your home.

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
