A Basic Guide to French Patio Doors

French doors are generally considered a great addition to any home. They also come in a variety of styles, so they can fit a range of architectural styles and home designs.

In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Memphis, a local provider of first-rate window replacement service, discusses the advantages of having a French door. We also share some tips on using this door in your interior and exterior.

Benefits of French Doors

Here are some of the most common reasons why homeowners choose to install French doors:

1. They provide a seamless visual connection between the interior and exterior or between adjoining rooms.

2. They allow a large amount of natural light into your home.

3. They help create an illusion of space, making small rooms seem bigger.

Ask your chosen window company regarding the features that you can add to your French door. For instance, if you’re concerned about the amount of heat that can transfer from the outside to your interior, you might want to ensure the door is adequately energy-efficient.

Where to Use French Doors

Interestingly, French doors can look great both indoors and outdoors. When used as an exterior door, a French door can function as an opening onto your patio, balcony or garden. And when it’s used as an interior door, it can serve as a divider between linked rooms or as shower surrounds in your bathroom.

Things to Consider

These are some of the things you should check before purchasing a French door:

1. Reliable weatherstripping

2.Double-paned or low-E glass

3. In-swing or out-swing (depends on the space you have)

4. Door size

5. Door lock system

"Our windows were the original ones that were installed when they built the house in 1972. They wouldn't open, they had been painted shut. They were single pane and the glaze was cracked everywhere. I had to put plastic up every year to help keep the house warm at least a little bit. My MIL was surprised that there weren't any panes in the windows. Now she loves it. We have put a film on the windows so we can see out but no one can see in. We are loving it!"
